英文版(原稿)

Shu Pao Lim MBE

Shu Pao came to London in 1959. After bringing up her four sons, at the age of  50, she went to Oxford to study Social Adminstration.  After  2 years in 1975  she worked as a Social Worker in Enfield. Then in 1978 She was employed by Camden Council as a Specialist Chinese Community Worker with the Chinese in Camden.  She is the first Chinese Community Worker in UK.

Shu Pao was the founder of the Camden Chinese Community Centre (  CCC )  This was set up in 1982 by  a group of volunteers with the Grants we received from Camden Council, European Economic Community, Greater London Council, Help the Aged and Age Concern.

CCCC started as an Advisory Centre and now we have 10 projects serving the Chinese in Camden and Chinese from other Boroughs where they have no Community Centres.  There are 33 Boroughs in London and there are only 15 community Centres to serve the Chinese in London

The Centre provides services for various age groups..  CCCC enable the Chinese to gain services such as Housing, Social Services, Health etc  This is due to Language Barriers especially the older generations who did not have the opportunity to learn English.  Some did not have the opportunity to learn their own language. (  This is the same with some of the local residents too)  Even  if they know the language not all English speaking People know HOW TO OBTAIN THE SERVISES THEY NEED.

If anyone wishes to know What CCCC does he/she can obtain his/her information from info@camdenccc.co.uk.

Besides CCCC Shu Pao set up the first " Group Home" for the Chinese in Camden.  The Director of Social Services in Camden, the Late Kenneth Erwin and the Director of Housing provided 6 self contained flats at Kilburn.  We housed 2 elderly people, a middle age Vietnamese woman who was a refugee, a couple with a new born baby, a young mother with 2 young children ( husband did not provide her with their needs.) and a Bilingual Nurse who helped the residents with their language issues and helped them to phone Social Services, Housing and Doctors etc. At that time I felt I did not wish to set up an Old Peoples' Home.I did not like the idea of old people live together and die together.  Unfortunately as soon as people heard about this Group Home they  ( Hospitals,   Social Services, and Individuals ) phoned me to request me to help them to find  accommodation for them to stay.  They are either homeless or their families do not wish to care for them.  That was the reason how I started to set up The Great Wall Society Ltd for 8 Residents only.  This is a converted house, there is no lift so those who come must be mobile and do not need nursing care.

Nowadays most people who come are over 80-90years.  Those who are 60 and 65 years know where to go.  They prefer to go to ordinary Sheltered Homes to llive with non-chinese neighbours. They feel living with Chinese together there is too much gossiping.  As for those who live at our Home, they grow older they become more frail and we are unable to allow them to continue to live at our Home because the facilities are  not good enough.  So the Social Worker had to recommend them to go to English Homes.  They suffer and they are neglected as they are not provided with their needs:  the food that they are used to and also they have language problems.

This is the reason I am NOW WORKING HARD TO SET UP  "An Extra Care Home for Frail Elderly Chinese In London"  I am  unable to get at least 4 Boroughs to join us to set this up.  Even though Housing Corporation is witlling to help us with some capital, Hanover Housing Association is willing to find a piece of land and build it, we still need 4 Boroughs to help us.

SO IF THERE IS ANY KIND HEARTED PERSON WHO IS WILLING TO HELP US PLEASE GET IN TOUCH WITH ME.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE TO READ THIS.
